Our story began in 1981 when Piyadasa Samararathna founded a local gem business in Sri Lanka, inspired by the island's rich heritage of gemstones. Through dedication, trust, and quality, he built a reputation for delivering exquisite sapphires and other precious stones sourced directly from Sri Lanka's mines.

In the few decades that followed, Piyadasa’s legacy was carried forward by his younger son, Chamara Samararathna. Under Chamara’s leadership, and in collaboration with business partner Ajith Jataweera, the business transformed into a global enterprise. Today, we proudly serve international markets, bringing the beauty and brilliance of Sri Lankan gems to clients around the world

Melbn Gems is renowned for its unique heating process that produces superior quality gems. Melbn Gems discovered that heat treatment adds significant value to rough stones. This discovery sparked an interest that led to the initiation of their own heating experiments with gems. They found a method to heat sapphires in a way that brought out the deepest and most vibrant blue from blue sapphires. The color created was unique, beautiful, and evenly dispersed throughout the gem.

However, during this time, allegations arose against Melbn Gems, with claims that they must have used unethical treatments or added chemicals during the heating process. Many in the industry, including researchers, found it difficult to believe that heating alone could produce sapphires of such exceptional brightness and beauty.
